Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, people around the world have paid attention to products whose names contain the word “Russia”, without creating a negative image for them. That’s why, for example, Russian cheese is known as Tilzite cheese. However, not all manufacturers decide to change the name in such cases.

The reader says: “Before the anniversary I stopped at the supermarket champagne shelves, looking for the most suitable one for the celebration in our house. I was very unpleasantly surprised to see “Sovetskoye Champanskoye” there. To me this memory of the time Soviet is not acceptable and does not seem very ethical to me. Why do we need such a product name, which for many can cause unpleasant associations, especially now, in the context of the war, when Russia once again demonstrates its power against the rest of the world? I wonder what the producers have to say about this? I venture to hope that perhaps these bottles are left over from an older, unsold batch.”
To find out what the situation is and how the producer comments on it, we contacted the president of the board of directors of AS “Amber Latvijas balzams” Intars Geidāns.
He emphasizes that so far the company has not received any negative comments on this topic: “Amber Latvijas balzams” has so far received no negative comments on the use of the name “Sovetskoje Šampanskoje”. In accordance with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia, sparkling wine “Sovetskoje Šampanskoje” of the joint-stock company “Amber Latvijas balzams” has been produced and sold in stores under this name since 1954.”
To distinguish its product from others, “Amber Latvijas balzams” also registered a trademark representing the name “Советское Шампанское” at the Patent Office of the Republic of Latvia in August 1997, and its placement on the label remained unchanged in all these years. None of the “Amber Latvijas balzams” products have recently changed names, nor are there any plans to do so.
