IN SHORT:
- The Florida “Panthers” have already offered Uvi Balinski a contract extension in the first half of the season.
- The father praises Balinski for his determination in his efforts to achieve higher goals in hockey.
- After a 15-year hiatus, Balinskis became the first Latvian defenseman to sign a one-way contract in the NHL.
- The seemingly lower salary figures in the new contract are far outweighed by the one-way status of the agreement.
- Balinski is one of only three Panthers defenders under contract for next season.
- Since the era of Sands Ozoliņš and Kārļis Skrastiņš, Latvian hockey has not had stable defenders in the strongest league in the world.
The “Panthers” announced on Wednesday the decision to extend the contract with 27-year-old Balinski until 2025/2026. for the end of the season.

Sandris Balinskis said other clubs were also interested in UVI, but the hockey player’s father did not expect a new deal to be reached so quickly. Before, the entry of Sandr Balinski’s son into the NHL didn’t even seem like a realistic future scenario.
“Obviously it is [spēlēšana NHL] he only appeared in dreams, at least for me, but probably not for Uvi,” explained Sandris Balinskis. “As he said after the first game in the NHL: ‘Dad, this was the plan.’ That goal and dream were probably bigger for him than for me and my mother. It’s something unreal, knowing the path he’s taken, it’s something unique.”
At the beginning of the season other clubs also showed interest in UVi and it became clear that a new contract with the “Panthers” was in the works. The father did not expect Uvya to get a new contract so quickly.
The Latvian defender was in the basic composition of the team at the beginning of the season, while the two defenders of the “Panthers” Áron Ekblad and Brandon Montur were recovering from injuries. When the two hockey players returned, Balinski continued to play, although he was later sent to an American Hockey League (AHL) farm club. Balinsky played 18 games in the NHL, scoring one goal and receiving recognition from coaches.
Balinskis became the first Latvian defenseman after a 15-year hiatus to sign a one-way contract with an NHL team.
Even if in the next two years the Latvian’s salary will theoretically be lower than this season’s, he will earn more trust from the team. Additionally, Balinski is on a two-way contract this season and his actual salary could turn out to be higher in future seasons.
For the next two seasons, Balinsky’s deal includes no additional bonuses, but the biggest benefit is a one-way contract worth $850,000 per year. A one-way contract guarantees a constant salary to a hockey player even if he has to play for a farm club.
So far, eight Latvian defensemen have played in the NHL, and the two most experienced with more than 800 games were Sandis Ozoliņš and Kārlis Skrastiņš. The NHL is getting younger, the players are changing and there is no high hope that any Latvian defenseman will reach the numbers of Ozo or Iron Man Skrastiņš in the near future.
Balinskis is the first Latvian defenseman since Oskars Bārtulis to receive a contract extension in the NHL after playing fewer than 20 games.
Bartulis needed just 10 games in 2009 to sign a three-year, one-way contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, who bought out the final contract at the end of the year.
So far the longest and most expensive contract among Latvian defenders has been for Ozoliņš: Karolīna’s “Hurricanes” have put on the table a five-year contract worth over 25 million dollars. Team general manager Jim Rutherford said at the time, “When you have a player like Sandis on the team, you’re willing to spend money.”
It is still premature to draw far-reaching conclusions about Balinsky’s future NHL career, but it is clear that the team is counting on him.
Five defenders of the “Panthers” will be out of contract after the season, and only three hockey players from the defensive line, including Balinski, will have valid contracts for next year. Balinski has the potential to become a solid NHL asset in the coming years, even if he isn’t a first-round defenseman. Since the era of Ozoliņš and Skraštiņš, Latvian hockey has not had stable NHL defensemen.
Currently, Balinskis plays for the farm club “Panthers” in the AHL, where he became the average scorer of the hockey player Charlotte “Checkers”. Balinski had one goal and seven assists in eight AHL games.
In the previous three seasons, Balinskis played in the Czech Republic, representing Liberec “Bīlī Tygrži” and Litvīnova “Verva”. Last season Balinski became the top scorer in the Czech league and each subsequent stage of his career is more and more enjoyable.
Balinski’s first season in North America is challenging for many first-timers, but Uvim turned out to be better than expected.
