Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains killed at least 129 people in Rwanda and also destroyed homes and blocked roads, Reuters reports. In neighboring Uganda, six people died this Wednesday due to a landslide also caused by rainfall.
The intense rains began at the end of March and transformed roads and streets of villages and cities into real rivers. At the same time, according to information from Rwandan public broadcaster RBA, the number of victims is expected to increase as the waters continue to rise.
The country’s president, Paul Kagame, offered his condolences to the victims and stated that his Government is helping those affected, setting up shelters in schools and other buildings. «We are doing everything in our power to face this difficult situation. “I am personally following the response closely,” Kagame wrote on his Twitter account.
In order to coordinate response operations to the consequences of the floods in the western and northern provinces, the Government established a management center. “Our top priority now is to reach all the houses that have been damaged to ensure that we can rescue anyone who may be trapped,” said François Habitegeko, governor of Rwanda’s western province.
