The thirteen Flemish colleges want to open the discussion with their memorandum about their agenda for the next Flemish government 2024-2029. Their general call is: invest now in talent for the society of tomorrow.
In concrete terms, the colleges cite, among other things, the problems in compulsory education. “Better compulsory education and solving the teacher shortage remain extremely important challenges during the next legislature,” it said. “Competent teachers, strong schools and high quality of education must be central to this.”
The colleges say they share a concern about the lack of diversity in teacher training. “That starts with giving the diversity of students in teacher training courses every opportunity,” it says. That is why the universities of applied sciences want to conduct a social debate about wearing philosophical badges in the workplace.
Other elements discussed in the memorandum include moving away from the waterfall, where some courses are more highly regarded than others, and getting every student in the right place by encouraging young people to choose where their passion lies.
