‘Taste gourd only 10 taka. Pair 15 rupees. Everybody will be happy if you take home a soft and fluffy gourd’—gourd seller Abdur Razzak was standing in the market saying the words to attract the attention of buyers.
He was saying, ‘You will not get such an opportunity again. Gourds will not be available at such a low price.’
On Friday (March 22) afternoon, such a scene was seen at the Baraichra market of Salimpur Union of Iswardi Upazila in Pabna.
Vegetable seller Abdur Razzak said, ‘Gourd and brinjal are the least expensive vegetables in today’s market. I have brought 150 pieces of gourd. Since the beginning of Ramadan, the value of gourd has decreased. Before Ramadan, a copy of the gourd was sold at Tk 30-50. Now nobody wants to take 10 rupees piece of gourd. So I am forced to sell one piece for 10 taka and one pair for 15 taka.
He also said, ‘The demand for vegetables decreases in the month of Ramadan. Besides, the production of gourd is more than other years. So the gourd has to be sold at a low price.’
Tuhin Hossain, a gourd farmer of Bakhtarpur village in the upazila said, I brought 25 pieces of gourd to the market. Except for the fare, I would have nothing. I sold a copy of the gourd for 10 taka.
He said, at the beginning of the season, there was a profit by selling gourds. But I didn’t think that the market of gourd would decrease so much now.
Ali Azgar of Mirkamari village bought a pair of gourds for 15 rupees. He told Jago News, ‘A lot of gourds have grown in the market. The gourd is quite soft and fluffy. So I bought a pair of gourds at a bargain price of 15 taka.’
Ishwardi upazila agriculture officer Mita Sarkar said, this time, 150 hectares of land in the upazila has been cultivated with gourds. Now the supply of other vegetables including gourd is high. Prices have fallen due to relatively low demand. But in the beginning of winter, the farmers got very profitable prices.
