Denis Odoi’s Ghana started the Africa Cup of Nations on a false note. They suffered a dramatic defeat against Cape Verde after conceding a goal in extra time (2-1). Earlier in the day, Nigeria and Egypt also failed to win.
Cape Verde offered the first real stunt of the Africa Cup of Nations. They took the lead early in the match after a rebound from Jamiro Monteiro and Ghana saw Majeed Ashimeru’s (Anderlecht) equalizer disallowed by VAR.
Ghana managed to equalize after the break thanks to Alexander Djiku. The equalizer gave Denis Odoi and his teammates courage and Joseph Paintsil (Racing Genk) narrowly missed out on making it 2-1.
In extra time the sky fell on the heads of the Ghanaians. Defensive errors were punished by Garry Rodrigues. His goal caused a frenzied scene as he celebrated the victory with fans in the stands.

Salah must save Egypt from defeat
Today in Group B, record champion Egypt avoided an embarrassment against Mozambique. Liverpool trendsetter Mohamed Salah asserted himself after two minutes with an assist for Mostafa Mohamed, but Mozambique overcame the Egyptians within three minutes with Witi (55′) and Clesio Bauque (58′) in the second half.
Deep in extra time, Salah saved the seven-time champion’s honor. Former Anderlecht striker Trezeguet was replaced shortly after the hour mark, while Ostend midfielder Alfons Amade remained between the lines for ninety minutes in Mozambique.
Even Nigeria cannot win their opening match
Nigeria failed to end their first Africa Cup of Nations match with a victory on Sunday. The Nigerians, who are one of Ivory Coast’s biggest favourites, were held to a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.
Former Charleroi striker Victor Osimhen canceled out Iban Salvador’s first goal for Nigeria, but the big favorite forgot to continue that momentum.
Antwerp midfielder Alhassan Yusuf was given a starting place, but, like Moses Simon (ex-Gent), was replaced with twenty minutes remaining. Paul Onuachu (formerly Genk) came on in injury time, the club’s midfielder Raphael Onyedika did not play at all.
