The fire in a monumental house in the center of Helmond is under control, the Brabant Zuidoost fire brigade reports. From outside the house in Kerkstraat-Zuid, flames could be seen coming out of the window into the attic. The house was built around 1895 and is a municipal monument.
The first report of the fire came shortly after half past five. In order to have sufficient firepower, firefighters responded quickly to a large fire.
Three fire engines were called to put out the fire. An aerial platform was also deployed so firefighters could reach the fire from above. A tanker assisted for a short time by providing sufficient fire water.
Turn off the ventilation
Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjacent house. According to a spokesperson, there were no casualties in the fire. Firefighters searched the home to make sure no one was inside. The cause of the fire is unknown.
At about half past six the firefighters reported that the fire was under control. However, the fire is still being put out. The fire department advises residents to close doors and windows and turn off ventilation in case of disturbances caused by smoke or odors.
The house was built around 1895 and originally housed a store within the building. “The building is particularly notable for its restrained detailing,” says the working group on the Helmond monument. The building is located on the corner of Kerkstraat-Zuid and De Wiel.
