Fini Schumer was appointed CEO of the Press Council

The Plenum of the Press Council last week approved the appointment of Fini Shumer as the Council’s CEO. Schumer, a former member of the Knesset and CEO of the Avshalom Institute for Haaretz Information, has been a member of the Council’s plenum in recent years as a public representative. The position of CEO in the body that brings together most of the major media outlets in Israel has not been filled for two years, after the resignation of the previous CEO Motti Rosenblum in early 2021.

Upon his appointment, Shumer said: “I will work to bring the council’s word to the public on the issues of freedom of speech and ethics. We will work together in tours, seminars, conferences. We are in a challenging period of war and alongside it a struggle for the image of the state. In this period, the Press and Communications Council is important as a central factor in safeguarding On the freedom of the press, the public’s right to know and the observance of rules of journalistic ethics.”

According to Schumer, “I will work to strengthen the council and bring its message to various publics in Israeli society while strengthening the relationship with the journalists and the various members of the media who will see it as a source of support and partnership to advance its goals for a free, good and professional press.”

The council’s announcement stated that “Shomer, a member of the Press Council as a public representative and active for many years in the public arena in senior positions in several leading organizations, brings with him life experience and commitment to the council’s mission: both protecting the freedom of the press and instilling in all layers of the public and the younger generation the vital need for ethical professional journalism to continue The existence of Israeli democracy.”
