These discoveries provide a fascinating look at the financial practices of the time and the evolving picture of the legendary leader throughout his life.
The Greek Reporter reported on Saturday (13/4/2024) that a set of 11 gold stators, each showing a unique representation of Alexander. Some depict him as a young conqueror with flowing hair, reminiscent of the classical Greek hero archetype.
Other works depict Alexander with a more mature appearance. Interestingly, many of these coins were minted posthumously during the reigns of Alexander’s successors, indicating that his image as a symbol of power and conquest continued to be revered.
“The different depictions on these gold stators are truly amazing. “This allows us to speculate about how depictions of Alexander may have evolved, perhaps reflecting how images of Alexander were used by his successors to bolster their own legitimacy,” said Dr. Eleni Michaelides, lead archaeologist on the dig.
Apart from the gold stator, the find also includes various collectibles. Silver coins were struck in various parts of the Greek world, including Olympia, Cyrene, and Corinth. These coins provide valuable insight into the economic networks of the time and the circulation of currency throughout Alexander’s vast empire. The existence of coins minted geographically far from Crete indicates the interconnectedness of trade routes during this period.
This discovery caused a huge stir among archaeologists and numismatists (coin collectors) around the world. “These coins show a real connection to antiquity and the vast legacy of Alexander the Great,” said Dr. Andreas Stavrides, famous numismatist.
The facts found on the island of Crete indicate its strategic role during the Hellenistic period. Crete was known as an important stopover for trade between the eastern and western sides of the Mediterranean.
The unearthed coins are currently undergoing a careful cleaning and conservation process to maintain their historical integrity. These artifacts will then be exhibited at the Chania Archaeological Museum, giving the public the opportunity to see these historical artifacts firsthand. The discovery has sparked great interest among scientists and history buffs around the world, and could spark new research into life and legacy Alexander Agung as well as the economic conditions of the ancient Mediterranean.
