Finally, the President of the country Ariful Rahman Alvi called the session of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He called the session on Thursday (February 29) despite earlier disagreement. The session will be held today at 10 am local time. The country’s media Dawn reported this news.
The first session of the National Assembly of Pakistan was called in a notice from the National Assembly Secretariat on Wednesday, according to Pakistan’s media Geo News. Later that night, President Alvi convened the session at the same time on Thursday.
According to the Constitution of Pakistan, a new National Assembly must be convened within 21 days of the general election. Accordingly, the session was convened on February 29.
But President Alvi refused to call the session as the issue of allocation of reserved seats to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) was not resolved.
As Alvi did not call the session, the Speaker of the National Assembly convened the session. However, a legal debate started over whether the Speaker can bypass the President and call the session.
Finally, President Alvi convened the session of the National Assembly of Pakistan. Members of Parliament will take oath at the beginning of the first session. Then the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition will be decided.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for the post of Speaker. The party has nominated Shahbaz Sharif for the post of Prime Minister. And PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari is becoming the president. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is expected to field a candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker based on consensus.
Elections to Pakistan’s National Assembly and four provincial assemblies were held on February 8. Voting was held in 264 seats of the General Assembly. Pakistan Harik-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independent candidates won a maximum of 90 seats in this election. However, PML-N, which came second with 79 seats, and PPP, which came third with 54 seats, are forming governments at the center and provinces through power sharing.
