Pop’s Starliest Night – Details

On January 28, 1985, dozens of music’s biggest stars gathered in a Los Angeles studio, shed their egos behind the door, and recorded a song in aid of famine relief in Africa that changed the history of world pop culture. Pop’s Starliest Night chronicles the mammoth undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in an age before mobile phones and email. This group of artists – led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most important musicians of the 20th century – Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie – came from different worlds but came together to record We Are the World.

Featuring never-before-seen footage, the film details the early stages of planning, including sessions with Richie and Jackson, and a look inside the famous Henson Studios where “We Are the World” was recorded. Many of the artists who attended that legendary night – Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Smokey Robinson, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick and Huey Lewis – along with the musicians, engineers and production team, remember one of the most famous nights in music history. Pop’s Starliest Night was directed by Bao Nguyen and produced by Julia Nottingham, the team behind the acclaimed Bruce Lee documentary (Be Water).

The world-class conductor Ernst van Tiel is heading to the Czech Republic to play the unique Harry Potter and Philosopher's Stone in Concert concerts.

As Variety magazine’s reviewers put it, Pop’s Starliest Night is a documentary for anyone who loves We Are the World, or for those who look at this legendary charity single with serious questions but are fascinated by its phenomenon. In a sense, We Are the World has always been a documentary—the famous video clip that captures the song as it was recorded, during a late-night session at A&M Recording Studios in Los Angeles immediately following the American Music Awards on January 28, 1985. (Organizers USA for Africa realized that only if the recording was moved to this night would they be sure that all the stars they needed for the song would be in one place at the same time.)

This music video was always more than just a video. It’s the psychodrama of pop stars revealing themselves, in miniature. That’s its beauty. And Pop’s Starliest Night , which premiered at Sundance, allows us to savor and expand on that vibe as it presents a behind-the-scenes look at where all these icons come together and let themselves drift for the greater good. Directed by Bao Nguyen and centered around Lionel Richie (he’s the lead guide), the documentary is certainly celebratory, but also honestly constructed and intensely enjoyable. No longtime fan should miss it, but younger viewers may find it intoxicating as well.

Pop’s starliest night pulls back the curtain on the eternal celebrity smoke screen of the music gods. We Are the World had three essential dimensions. The first, of course, was the reason for the creation of the song: saving the lives of Ethiopians affected by famine. We Are the World, which sold 20 million copies (becoming the ninth best-selling single of all time), raised more than $60 million for humanitarian aid, making it the pinnacle of the Play for you-out-of-compassion pop star movement, which originated in 1971 with George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh. We Are the World has saved real lives and put the suffering in Africa more prominently on the global media map.

American Songwriter, a magazine founded in 1984 that helps millions of music fans and songwriters discover the craft of music through interviews, reviews, articles, news, contests and more, said of the film: The parameters for the recording of We Are the World were unreasonably strict to they could work. It was the night of the American Music Awards in 1985. Richie was chosen to host, giving him double duty as he was also tasked with directing the project. With so many stars coming to the AMAs, We Are the World organizers decided to set up the taping to start immediately after the ceremony. One can only imagine the workflow of 46 mercurial musicians exhausted from the extensive awards show and a little tipsy. Needless to say, it was a long night.

The documentary reveals that they left the studio around eight o’clock the next morning. The amount of jokes that Stevie Wonder made during the documentary was really interesting. If it was a screenwriting project, he would be a comedian. One particularly successful moment came when he got stuck on his own words in an impromptu performance of Banana Boat (Day-O). At times his banter got in the way of the recording process, but he made up for it by helping the train get back on track when his fellow musicians struggled to find their vocal parts. When you’re as revered as Bob Dylan, it’s hard to imagine ever feeling out of place. Nevertheless, he seemed noticeably uncomfortable during the recording of the song We Are the World. As the whole group recorded the chorus, Dylan looked like many of us in choir class, humming the tune while looking around to see if anyone recognized it. When it came time to record his bridge solo, he stepped up to the microphone and literally whispered his lines. It wasn’t until Wonder sat down at the piano and did his best Dylan impersonation that he felt comfortable enough to sing his solo. It’s nice to know that even Dylan gets a little tongue-tied sometimes.

Halfway through recording the chorus, Wonder suggested that the singers add a few lines in Swahili. It was an idea that the whole group quickly shot down, but not before Waylon Jennings got up and walked out of the recording studio. He reportedly told the artists next to him that “no proper boy sings in Swahili” before quickly leaving the room. However, it has been well documented that these musicians were and are top notch. Seeing them live reminds us of how stellar they really were. Hearing Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Perry and Daryl Hall back to back was mind blowing. And I’m not talking about Ross, Jackson, Lauper and Kim Carnes competing in singing. It was truly a masterclass in individualism and excellence.
