Femicides in Cuba rise to 15 Cubanet

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- A 45-year-old woman, resident in Sibanicú, in the province of Camagüey, was murdered by her ex-partner on March 25.

According to the report socialized on networks by independent feminist platforms, Yudeisi Pedroza, mother of two children, lived in the town of Hatuey, in Sibanicú, and was murdered inside her home.

“We send our condolences to her two children, of whom one is a minor, other family members and close friends,” wrote the Cuban feminist magazine Tense Wings on Facebook.

The news of this act of sexist violence was also shared on Monday by the influencer Niover Licea, who claimed to have confirmed the feminicide with those close to Pedroza. According to Liceca, the feminicide waited until the woman was alone in her house and attacked her with a machete, making several cuts on the victim’s body.

With this, the number of femicides verified by independent feminist platforms rises to 15, who maintain the visibility of the cases and warn of the increase in sexist violence in Cuba.

Along with the news of this new event, the Gender Observatory and Yo Sí Te Creo in Cuba also reported that there were two attempts at feminicide in Cuba.

For the inclusion of another five cases in the under-registration of femicides on the Island, they need access to the police report.

In addition, they are investigating an alert in Manzanillo, another in Ciego de Ávila, two in Havana and one more in Artemisa.

Just a week ago, independent feminist platforms confirmed two femicides in Cuba, bringing the number of violent deaths of women to 14 so far this year.

The victim’s body was found in a field in the Los Arabos municipality, in Matanzas. In this case, the platforms denounced the lack of support from the local police in the search for the elderly woman, affectionately known as “Chiquitica.”

Without access to the official records of the Cuban police and without support from the authorities, the gender observatories in Cuba maintain an under-record of cases of gender violence that have already reported 15 femicides in just three months.

Feminist organizations, concerned about the situation of violence, made a second request for approval of a Comprehensive Law Against Gender Violence.

Although an official from the National Assembly of People’s Power reported that they would review the request, the previous request, from 2019, was not included in the legislative schedule. Meanwhile, new victims of sexist violence are added to the statistics.
