Two Russian tourists have been unable to return from their vacation in Turkey for a month and a half. The women said that local police detained them at the airport, brutally beat them, and tore out their nails, Liter.kz reports, citing the Telegram channel SHOT.
As one of the tourists, 48-year-old Muscovite Svetlana, told SHOT, she and her 38-year-old friend Yulia flew to Antalya on a package holiday on June 6. They bought gin at Duty Free in Domodedovo and drank about 200 ml each, so that they wouldn’t be afraid to fly. They put the unfinished bottle in a bag.
Already at the Antalya airport, Yulia, who was carrying a bag of alcohol, calmly passed through passport control. But her friend Svetlana was stopped and refused entry into the country, explaining this by a problem with her documents. The Russians barely spoke English and did not understand what the problem was. Yulia took out her phone in the hope of contacting someone. But the border guards, according to the tourist, decided that they would be filmed and took away her phone.
The women started to quarrel and tried to get their property back. A scuffle ensued. One of the tourists had her nails pulled out in the process. The Turks eventually handcuffed them and took them to a police station at the airport. Already at the police station without cameras, the women claim, the officers beat them on the face and body, leaving bruises.
The friends spent the night in a pretrial detention center, and the next day the trial took place. They were banned from leaving the country and accused of resisting the police. The punishment under local laws is severe – up to three years in prison.
The Russian women have been under a travel ban for over a month now. They rented an apartment with their last money and have almost no money left for food.
The tourists say that the embassy offered them to hire a lawyer for seven thousand euros.
