The leader of PP, Alberto Núñez Feijoohas trusted the former Minister of Health and current MEP Sorrows Montserrat to once again head the PP list for the elections European Parliament on June 9, as announced by the leader of the PP in an event in Figueres (Girona). She has done it with a phrase about race that has generated quite a bit of controversy: «Catalan to the core. Catalan triple porque es Dolors Montserrat Montserrat«.
The reactions have not been long in coming. While a part of his potential electorate has described the statements as “racists“, others have reminded him that, due to this rule of three, his candidate for the Catalan elections would not belong to that “race”, since His name is Alejandro and his last name is Fernández Álvarez.
«The PP boasting of a candidate with purity of Catalan race», «Feijoo likes black-legged Catalans, with their 8 Catalan surnames. The rest for him we must be settlers«, «Y Because of things like this I no longer vote for the Popular Party…”, some users have written in X (formerly Twitter)very critical of his words.
In the 2019 elections, the then president of the PP, Pablo Casado, chose Montserrat as the head of the list in the European elections and five years later Feijoo has decided that she will once again be the ‘number one’ of the PP candidacy. On June 9 she will face, among others, the socialist Teresa Ribera and with the Head of Delegation of VOX in the European Parliament, Jorge Buxadé.
In recent days, a trickle of names have been known that will be part of the PP’s list for the European elections, among them Adrian Vazquez, former secretary general of Ciudadanos and still an MEP in Brussels for the orange formation. Two other Cs MEPs will also be part of that list, Susana Solís and Eva Poptcheva.
Vázquez, who resigned from the General Secretariat of Ciudadanos last March, has justified his jump to the PP with the argument that the formation led by Alberto Núñez Feijoo in «“This moment is the only political alternative” capable of “reconstructing” “civic and constitutional coexistence.”«.
Likewise, this Wednesday Alberto Núñez Feijoo announced that the philosopher Fernando Savater will close the PP list for the European elections. “He is an authoritative voice and with a biography committed to the defense of democratic values,” he said, to ensure that “It’s time to uniteoutside and inside politics”, “on the streets and at the polls” for “equality and freedoms”.
