Fatwa in Kuwait against unlocking a mobile with the fingerprint of a deceased person

The Fatwa Department of the Ministry of Awqaf in Kuwait has issued a fatwa banning the use of a deceased person’s finger or face to unlock their mobile phone.

The concerned department receives requests from relatives of the deceased to allow them to use their finger or face to unlock the deceased’s phone.

On Friday, several local media published the official document of the Afta sector, which included the funeral department’s response that it is not permissible to view the contents of a deceased citizen’s phone and not maintain their privacy.

The fatwa clarified that if necessary, the court or competent security authority should access such phone.

Kuwaiti bloggers have expressed mixed reactions to this fatwa on social media. Some social media users called for blocking access to the deceased’s privacy, while another group said that unlocking the deceased’s phone was necessary to get vital information about their family.

“They take selfies with the deceased and blatantly violate their privacy,” wrote one blogger. Unfortunately, in our time there is no more respect for the dead.’

Another social media said that ‘On the contrary, this request seems logical. A deceased person’s mobile phone may have records of debts. It is possible that he believed that he did not pay others and that his family did not know anything about him and that he did not write it in his will, so they could not be buried.
