GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Jorge Sebastián Pop Chocoj, better known as Farruko Pop, a young Guatemalan indigenous influencer who had been missing for a week, was found dead in a grave located inside an abandoned house in an area of the capital Guatemala that registers high rates of violence.
The National Institute of Forensic Sciences confirmed the identity of the deceased on Saturday and said the cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation. He added that he would have died between four and six days ago.
The prosecutor’s office announced on Saturday that together with the police it was carrying out a raid on an abandoned house in zone 18 of the capital, which is plagued by gangs.
Pop Chocoj, 18, was known for his social media content and his aspirations to become a singer. He had tried without success to find a place in the Mexican singing competition “La Academia”, in his version in Guatemala.
According to a government official, who requested anonymity because the investigation was still open, the young man maintained communication with the profile of a woman on Facebook, with whom he had decided to meet.
Pop Chocoj traveled to the capital with the aim of meeting the person, but was taken to the area where his body was located buried in a grave. Authorities believe the profile is fake.
The prosecution located weapons, alcoholic beverages and the influencer’s belongings at the scene.
Dozens of influencers gathered outside the morgue to demand justice and find the young man’s murderers.
“Terrible news,” declared Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez on social network X. He added that video images helped determine the route the influencer took, as well as where and how he was transported.
“Today the Public Ministry has an immense responsibility. “We want to go after criminals with the full force of the law,” he said.
