Falling bricks and dangerous bathrooms: eight construction errors in Brabant

A residential complex under construction in Schaijk is to be demolished again. Reason: The foundation is too low and needs to be raised. This is not possible without demolishing the building under construction and starting all over again. This is not the first time that things have gone wrong in Brabant due to a construction error. An overview.

January 2024
The newly built apartments in Repellaan in Schaijk are not yet finished, but have already been demolished due to a construction error around the foundations.

September 2020
Things went badly in Breda in 2020. Or even ten years earlier, because during the construction of the Vredenbergh retirement complex they forgot to bury the toilets. Construction error, thanks, but could be potentially dangerous.

2020
In 2020, pieces of the facade of the De Regent residential tower in Eindhoven suddenly collapsed. This can be dangerous, among other things residents have had to install fences. Who will pay for this is a question the judge will rule on in 2024.

July 2019
The balconies of more than twenty owner-occupied apartments on the Zwijnsbergenstraat in Breda had to be marked with a stamp. Due to a construction error, the balconies sagged slightly causing flooding. There was never any danger, the construction company assured residents.

May 2017
The best-known case on this list is probably the garage at Eindhoven Airport, which partially collapsed in May 2017. In 2018 it became clear that this was a construction error: due to a design error in the floors, the foundation failed to hold the weight.

February 2016
On February 27, 2016, things went completely wrong in the monumental building on the corner of the Markt in Den Bosch, where the Pearl optician is located. Construction workers removed a dividing wall, causing the building to collapse. The wooden wall turned out to be a load-bearing wall, a mistake from 1992.

2016
Since its completion in 2016, Breda railway station has been plagued by problems due to construction errors. A dilapidated bus station, stones falling from the ceiling and leaks are just some of the problems. To this day there are still small problems with the station.

September 2014
In 2014 two employees died in an accident at the Van de Reijt fertilizer factory in Waalwijk. One of the eight retaining walls collapsed, burying the two under concrete blocks. Cobouw, a construction industry newspaper, concluded that experts found “numerous construction errors” on old construction drawings.
