The failed coup attempt in Bolivia ended with an unexpected confession by the general, Liter.kz reports, citing a local edition.
On June 27, under the leadership of retired army chief Juan José Zuniga, the military attempted to storm the Quemado presidential palace in armored personnel carriers.
Bolivian President Luis Arce responded to the events by appointing a new military leadership and swearing in the new army commander, General José Wilson Sánchez, in the presence of soldiers and journalists. After the assault, Arce called on the nation to stand up for democracy and resist any coup attempt, emphasizing that the government was ready to resist threats to democracy.

Local media reported that before the events, Zuniga held talks with Arce, after which the general and his troops left the government building, declaring their desire to restore democracy and free political prisoners. The situation stabilized when the military retreated and the place in La Paz’s Murillo Square was taken over by supporters of the president, chanting for democracy.
Following these events, the Bolivian Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation against Zuniga and other participants for terrorism and armed rebellion. During his arrest, Zuniga spoke to journalists, making statements that contradicted the official version of events.
According to him, he spoke with Bolivian President Luis Arce on June 23, and he spoke about the need to take action to increase his popularity. As his lawyer clarified, in addition to Zuniga himself, Air Force General Marcelo Javier Segarra and Vice Admiral Juan Arnes Salvador were also detained.
According to Bolivian Deputy Interior Minister Johnny Aguilera, nine people were injured during the coup attempt.
In addition, the head of the Bolivian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Eduardo Del Castillo, presented to the media the detained General Juan José Zuniga in handcuffs and a bulletproof vest with the inscription “detained” on it.
