Fact Check: Video of CAA protest in Bengal in 2019 viral with communal claim

Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral video of people vandalising the railway station is not from any recent incident but from a 2019 anti-CAA protest in West Bengal, which is now being shared with false claims, giving it a communal angle.

New Delhi (New Delhi). A video is going viral on social media in which some people can be seen vandalising a railway station. An attempt is being made to give the video a communal angle by sharing it and it is being claimed that this video is from Bengal’s Navpada Mahishasur railway station where people were facing problems in offering namaaz due to the sound of the train’s whistle, due to which they vandalised the railway station.

Vishvas News found in its investigation that the viral video is not recent. This video is of a protest against CAA in West Bengal in the year 2019, which is now being shared with false claims giving it a communal angle.

What is going viral?

Facebook user ‘Rajesh Chourasiya’ shared the viral video on 8 July 2024 and wrote in the caption, “Mahishasur Railway Station of West Bengal destroyed by Jihadis. Look at the increased courage of Jihadis in Mamata Bano ruled Bengal. Mahishasur Railway Station located in Murshidabad, West Bengal was destroyed saying that the sound of the train whistle was disturbing their prayers. We are capable of seeing the future of India. The current government of India should answer for the above act because now the matter is about destroying the properties under the Central Government and disrupting the facilities of the entire public. “

This claim has gone viral once before with a misleading claim. At that time also we had verified this claim. investigation At that time, to find out the truth of the claim, we searched the key frames of the video through Google reverse image. We found this video uploaded on a YouTube channel named Wild Films India on 18 November 2020. According to the information available there, the viral video was of a protest against CAA in Bengal. At that time, we found many other videos similar to the viral video shared on Facebook in the year 2019 with the same information that this video is of the railway station of Murshidabad district of Bengal.

During the investigation, we found a longer version of the viral video shared on a YouTube channel named Mohammad Ejaz Ahmed on December 14, 2019. Here too, the video was claimed to be of a protest against CAA.

On searching with the help of relevant keywords, we found a report related to the claim published on Bengal’s local website Eismaya.com on 15 December 2019. According to the report, there were protests against CAA at many places in Bengal. People resorted to vandalism and violence in many cities. After reports of arson and vandalism at the railway station in Murshidabad district, the state government appealed to the people not to resort to violence.

At that time, Vishwas News had also talked to Anand Saha, a local journalist of Murshidabad district, regarding this video. He told us, “The viral video is from the year 2019, when people had protested against CAA here. During this time, people had vandalized many railway stations including Navpada Mahishasur. This video is from this incident.”

Finally, we scanned the account of the user who shared the video with the false claim. We found that the user Rajesh Chourasiya is followed by around 3000 people.
