Fact Check: This video of US President Joe Biden using abusive language is a deepfake

New Delhi (Viswas News). US President Joe Biden announced on July 21, 2024 that he will distance himself from the claim for re-election and will no longer contest the US presidential election. After this, a video clip of him is going viral on social media, in which he can be seen using abusive language. The post is claiming that this video is of Biden’s first public address after announcing his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential election.

Vishvas News in its investigation found that an audio clone of Joe Biden’s voice has been added to the viral video with the help of AI. This video is a deepfake. The original video was from July 15, 2024, when Biden delivered an address after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

What is in the viral post?

X User ‘pawan’ (Archive) shared the viral post and wrote, “Breaking Now: President Joe Biden makes his first video address following dropping out of the Presidential race. (Breaking Now: President Joe Biden gives his first video address following dropping out of the Presidential race.)”

Starting our investigation, first of all we watched the viral video properly. On watching the video carefully, the logo of PSB News is visible on the bottom left. On searching with keywords, we found a tweet of PSB News dated 22 July 2024. In this Tweet In the tweet, the viral video was described as a deepfake. “A deepfake video of President Joe Biden bearing our logo is circulating on social media. Biden did not make this statement. PBS News did not authorize the use of this video and we do not condone altering news video or audio in any way that could mislead the audience. After this we started searching for the original video. We found this original video uploaded on The White House’s YouTube channel on July 15. In this video, they were condemning the attack on former President Donald Trump.

We reached out to our partner DAU (an MCA initiative) regarding the video. Experts checked the video on audio from AI testing tools, Hive Moderation and Locus, and the tools found the audio to be synthetic. As for the visuals, Hive Moderation marked the visuals shown in the video as deepfake and TruMedia also pointed out the possibility of AI in the video.

We also spoke to AI expert Azhar Machwe on this subject. He also called it a deepfake.

In the social scanning of user X who shared the fake post, we found that user pawan is followed by more than 2000 people on X.

Vishvas News in its investigation found that the video is a deepfake, where Biden’s lip movement and his voice have been altered. The original video was from July 15, 2024, when Biden delivered an address after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
