New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of stones being thrown at a rally is going viral on social media. It is seen that some people are throwing stones at the rally held with saffron flags. Some users are sharing this and claiming that this is a recent incident in West Bengal.

Vishvas News in its investigation found that the viral video is from 2023 in Odisha. It has no connection with West Bengal.

Facebook user Dharmendra Ojha (archive link) posted the video on May 1 and wrote, “You can’t even hold a rally in Bengal with the saffron flag. See what kind of hooliganism is there in Bengal. It is as if Bengal has not become Bangladesh.

To verify the viral claim, we extracted the keyframe of the video and searched it with the help of Google Lens. During this time, we found a video on Times Now’s YouTube channel on 13 April 2023, in which glimpses of the viral clip can be seen. According to the caption accompanying the video, “Communal violence broke out during a Hanuman Jayanti rally in the Sambalpur district of Odisha on April 12. At least 10 policemen suffered injuries in the clash and several vehicles were torched and damaged.(Odisha on April 12) “Communal violence broke out during the Hanuman Jayanti rally in Sambalpur district in which at least 10 policemen were injured and several vehicles were set on fire and damaged.”

After this we searched whether any such incident has come to light in West Bengal recently. According to a Times of India report dated 19 April 2024, at least four people were injured in an alleged incident of stone pelting at a Ram Navami procession in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district.

According to Dainik Jagran’s April 18 news, “Incidents of stone pelting and explosions took place at Ram Navami processions in several areas of Murshidabad district of West Bengal, with violence breaking out in Shaktipur, Manikyahar and Rejinagar areas. At least 20 people, including a woman and two children, were injured in these clashes.”
