In several places, especially in the east of the country, the ground is extremely slippery due to freezing wet road sections. Rijkswaterstaat warns road users on the A35 and N35 near Enschede and on the A1 motorway near Azelo of slippery driving conditions and has adjusted the maximum speed in some places to 90 or 50 kilometers per hour.

Due to the slippery conditions, the KNMI has declared code orange (be prepared) for the provinces of Overijssel, Gelderland, Limburg and Noord-Brabant. The yellow code applies to Utrecht, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe (attention). The slipperiness will disappear tomorrow morning.

Accidents

Due to the slippery conditions, accidents occurred in several places. The driver of a car has died in a two-vehicle collision on the N315 provincial road near Zelhem in Achterhoek. The other driver was injured.

Police say it is “slippery” there and that even walking on the road surface is “a challenge.” Police in the eastern Netherlands region are also warning of slippery conditions in other parts of Gelderland and Overijssel due to ice.

In the early hours of the evening, police in these two provinces were involved in ten incidents simultaneously, not all necessarily related to slippery conditions. “But this indicates that the situation is slippery,” says a police spokesperson. “This is way above average. We don’t even have that many accidents during morning or evening rush hours.”

There are reports of accidents due to slippery conditions from Enschede, the Emmen area and Deventer, among others.
