Scientists at the University of Aberdeen have found that five hours of physical activity a week changes the way the body burns saturated fat and starts the process of using it as energy.

Publika.az reports that the results of the study were published in the journal “Nature Communications”.

Scientists have studied how different types of fat are used by the body, depending on a person’s fitness level. For this, they conducted an experiment with the participation of two volunteer groups. The first included trained male athletes in good health, and the second included volunteers with type 2 diabetes who did little or no exercise. Both groups exercised regularly during the eight-week study.

Athletes were instructed to reduce the intensity of their usual training. Diabetics did five hours of endurance exercise per week.

Before and after the experiment, the volunteers were injected with small amounts of different fats and underwent MRI scans to see how they dissolved inside the muscle cells.

It turns out that among athletes, saturated fats are intensively used as a “preferred energy source” during physical activity. Initially, the body of untrained participants with diabetes primarily “stores” these fats and accumulates them in the form of subcutaneous fat. However, after completing an exercise program, the metabolism of saturated fat in diabetic patients is similar to that of athletes. It not only helps in weight loss but also improves glucose regulation in the body.
