The trip was enriching! (Photo credit: Sahanala-Kobaby)

On September 5, 6, and 7, six professional fishermen from the rural communes of Ambolobozy, Mahavanona, Ankatongana visited the lobster value chain in Tolagnaro with a view to exchanging know-how. The project was initiated by a collaboration between Sahanala-Kobaby, as well as the two regional directorates involved, namely, Environment and Sustainable Development, Fisheries andANDblue economy.

The project’s instigators chose the Anosy region because this part of the country excels in the fishing sector. Thus, in the space of three days, northern fishermen acquired a technique that promotes the conservation of the marine environment. In addition, social cohesion and self-discipline allow the Fort-Dauphinois to have inexhaustible marine resources. Which is unfortunately not the case for their northern compatriots. Indeed, in the DIANA region, closing dates are hardly respected despite awareness-raising. Frankly, they are very advanced. We should have the same mindset. Personally, I have learned a lot. We will not only share everything we have learned during this trip, but also raise awareness among our comrades. “, admits Vanona Beanjara, one of the participants…

Lobster is a flagship product of Taolagnaro. According to information, this region produces nearly 400 tons per year. In addition, the use of natural fiber boats and biodegradable nets helps improve yield. Astonished, the DIANA delegation is fully convinced that fishing is more than a job, it is a passion, an art. On both sides, the meeting is enriching. This type of exchange contributes to the sustainable development of the sector.

Apart from the six fishermen, two officials from the DIANA regional directorate of the Blue Economy, Orien Razandrimalala and his work colleague Yvette Soafeno as well as the project manager of Sahanala Kobaby – Antsiranana Gaillord Jaona were present. These personalities promised to take up the challenge in order to achieve their main objective: to maintain the marine ecosystem for sustainable fishing!
