Félix Giménez, director of the National Agency for Transit and Road Safety (ANTSV), said that the increase of fatal victims in traffic accidents is worrying, and gave the spooky figure of one dead every 8 hours.
In the 650 am, Giménez said that “we really have an average of three deceased per day, and dividing that, it gives you one killed every 8 hours.” The head of ANTSV expressed concern about the persistence of alarming figures, despite the awareness campaigns that are developed in schools, universities and companies. “We are doing all possible awareness work, but it is not enough,” he said.
Between 2022 and 2023 there were more than 100,000 road accidents throughout the country. Although a reduction of approximately 5,000 people injured in that period was achieved, the number of deaths increased in a sustained way, reaching 1,290 in 2023.
“We are fifth at the South America in the number of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants,” said ANTSV director, noting that Paraguay continues among the countries most affected by road insecurity in the region.
Giménez concluded that it is urgent to reinforce not only educational campaigns, but also public prevention, control and sanction policies, to reduce high mortality rates in traffic.
