For the first time this year there is a ban on lighting fires within the municipal boundaries, although it was immediately reported that this ban will not be respected. In recent days, fireworks were also still on sale in the city. This meant that very few people in the city seemed to care about the ban on rockets and firecrackers.
The municipality announced the ban to spend a ‘safe and pleasant’ New Year’s Eve. “If I had to consider setting off fireworks as an event, given the damage on the street and the victims involved, I would never issue a permit for it,” said Mayor Theo Weterings of Tilburg. Last year, when lighting was still allowed, firefighters received 26 reports on New Year’s Eve, according to data from the National Institute of Public Safety.
Anyone who looked at the sky just after midday noticed little difference from previous years. Alternatively, firework displays were planned in Piushaven and Reeshofpark, but these were canceled due to strong winds. There were also 17 events planned across the city to offer people an alternative on New Year’s Day.
