Even though everyone is searching, no one keeps track of those postal peons – 2024-06-25 22:35:05

‘How are you? How long have I not seen you, send a letter to a rusty post box everyday, give love in an envelope, keep a little search’- such different titles were exchanged in letters in khaki envelopes. Once upon a time these khaki envelopes were delivered by postal peons to their loved ones from city to village and from village to city. With the change of time, no one writes letters to loved ones anymore.

Advances in technology in the digital age have left postmen with less of a job. Still, important letters of many private organizations including government have to be delivered through post. And those who do these delivery related tasks are the ED employees or postal peons of neglected postal department.

According to Post Office sources, there are around 392 ED (Extra Departmental) employees in Gaibandha district. They have been working for a long time with a nominal salary of 4 thousand 460 taka.

With this little money, they have been living with their families for a long time. It has become difficult for them to run their family with this small amount of money in the current low market. They claim that they did not get even a little taste of the joy of Eid by working on this salary.

Gaibandhar ED (Extra Departmental) employee Abu Zahid said the commodity price market is unbridled. It is becoming difficult to run our family with the amount of money we get. Can’t even buy good food. I can’t buy a good cloth in a year. This is how life goes? It has become difficult for us to survive.

Earlier too, the ED employees of the postal department held a human chain and held a press conference to draw the attention of the Prime Minister and raised six-point demands including salary increase. Their demands are- Abolition of ED system in postal department, inclusion in national pay scale, phased inclusion of ED employees in revenue sector, introduction of a uniform recruitment structure, construction of buildings in each post office and provision of all services in branch post offices like divisional offices.

An employee of the Gaibandha post office said on condition of anonymity that the 392 postal peons in the district get a nominal Rs. It is not possible to run their family with this money. He felt that ED employees should also be given the same benefits that I get from the government revenue sector including salary and allowances.

Gaibandha Post Master Bilpab Kumar Das told Jago News that the demands being made by the ED employees of the postal department should be looked into by the higher authorities.
