Erik Ten Hag’s former student was sentenced to 6 years in prison for transporting more than 1 ton of drugs

Recently, the former Dutch international, who was once a favorite student of coach Erik Ten Hag at Ajax, Quincy Promes, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for drug trafficking.

Recently, the Amsterdam Court issued a final verdict on the case of transporting more than 1 ton of drugs by Quincy Promes. Accordingly, the 32-year-old Dutch winger currently playing for Spartak Moscow (Russia) was sentenced to 6 years in prison.

The court document stated that Promes “participated in the drug trafficking case despite being a high-paid football player and having great influence with fans. This shows that the defendant tried to increase illegal wealth (and possibly increased prestige in the underworld)”.

The incident occurred in January 2020, when two shipments of drugs trying to enter Antwerp port (Belgium) via a container ship named Cap San Nicolas were arrested by Belgian police. The first batch was hidden in salt bags containing 650kg of drugs and the second batch printed with the tiger logo contained 712kg. The court said phone wiretaps accused Promes of being directly involved in the shipments.

Ten Hag was the one who brought Promes to Ajax in 2019.

Promes did not attend the hearing held on January 24 and also denied all allegations. The player’s lawyer said he would appeal, while Promes himself revealed that he “will not return to the Netherlands in the near future”.

Promes is a player who came from the Ajax training academy, then played for Twente, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and was bought by Ajax in 2019 when the club was led by Erik Ten Hag. In the period from 2019 to 2021, Promes made 53 appearances and scored 22 goals and assisted 6.

He is known as Ten Hag’s favorite player, who is currently the coach of MU. In 2020, Ten Hag expressed support for Promes when he allegedly stabbed a cousin during a family party in Abcoude, south of Amsterdam. This is the reason why Promes missed the 2022 World Cup despite being included in the preliminary list by Van Gaal. In the trial opened last year, the player who moved to Spartak Moscow in 2021 was sentenced in absentia to 18 months in prison for this crime.
