MEXICO CITY (apro).- During the second quarter of 2024, an increase of 805 thousand employed people was reported, compared to the same period in 2023, reaching the mark of 59.3 million employed people, according to the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE).
This Monday, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) announced the results of the Economically Active Population (EAP) –which is made up of the sum of employed and unemployed people–, the data was 61 million people, which represents 60.2% of the population aged 15 years and older, during the period from April to June 2024.
According to ENOE information, an increase of 805 thousand employed people was reported compared to the same period in 2023. The increase was concentrated in the construction industries (with 313 thousand people); social services (252 thousand); transportation and communications and mail and storage (154 thousand); professional, financial and corporate services (145 thousand) and trade (139 thousand).
The data, by gender, indicate that –during the second quarter of the year– the male EAP was 36 million, 301 thousand more people than in the same period in 2023; while the female EAP was 24.9 million –from April to June 2024–, 436 thousand more people than in the same period last year.
In addition, the data indicate that, for the second quarter of this year, the underemployed population was 4.4 million people, 7.4% of the employed population, which represented a decrease compared to the same period last year, when it was 8 percent.
Likewise, the unemployed population was reduced to 1.6 million, equivalent to 2.7% of the EAP, which also indicates a reduction in relation to the same period in 2023, when the figure stood at 2.8%.
According to INEGI, the states with the highest rates of informal employment were: Oaxaca, with 80.2%; Guerrero with 77.3%; Chiapas 74.8% and Hidalgo with 72.9%. On the other hand, the states with the least informality were Coahuila with 35%; Nuevo León with 35.4%; Chihuahua with 35.6% and Baja California with 36.5%.
