The UN Security Council is going to hold an emergency meeting regarding the Israeli attack on Al-Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The office of Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa confirmed that the meeting was convened at the request of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday (June 9). Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this news.
Palestinian news agency Wafa News reported that at least 210 Palestinians were killed in the operation, according to the Gaza government media office. The Israeli army rescued four Zimjis from the Nuseirat refugee camp. It is not yet clear whether the two incidents are part of the same operation.
Wafa News also reported that President Mahmoud Abbas has instructed the Palestinian ambassador to call an emergency session of the Security Council at the United Nations.
According to the organization, President Abbas is engaged in intensive communication with relevant Arab and international parties to convene this emergency session of the UN Security Council.
According to a post on social media from the office of the President, Abbas emphasized the urgent need for international intervention to stop the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. In addition, international intervention is also needed to implement the UN resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the Israeli aggression in Gaza.
Nearly eight months of fighting have left vast swaths of Gaza in ruins. There is also acute shortage of food, clean water and medicine. In such circumstances, the International Court of Justice accused Israel of genocide. At the same time, the operation in Rafah city has been ordered to stop. Even so, the Israeli army continues to operate in the city, where at least one million Palestinian refugees have taken refuge.
