As a consequence, the social media site could face a ban in Indonesia if it fails to comply with rules regarding adult content in the country. For those unaware, Indonesia has strict rules that prohibit the online sharing of content that falls under the pornographic category.

According to Reuters, Indonesia’s Communications Minister Budi Ari Setiadi has sent a warning note to the platform regarding the matter. This could mean that if the platform does not change its policies and restrict consensual sexual content and adult nudity, the platform may face service disruptions in the country sponsored by the state.

“We will definitely shut down its services,” the minister said in the country’s electronic information and transaction centre.

The platform recently updated its policies to allow adult content provided it is created with consent. Elon Musk’s platform has not shared any response to the warning letter. Indonesia will likely send more letters before planning to shut down the services. The social media platform has 24.85 million users in the country. Meanwhile, the platform rolled out its adult content policy in early June to allow users to create, distribute and consume content around sexual themes provided it is “created and distributed with consent”.

companyX said it restricts the visibility of content for children and adults who may not choose to view it. “We also prohibit content that exploits, non-consensually, objectifies, sexualises or harms minors, and promotes pornographic behaviour,” the X help centre said. According to the platform, adult content includes “any consensually produced and distributed content depicting adult nudity or sexual behaviour that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal”. It may also include AI-generated, animated or photographic content.
