Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport will have electronic counters for automatic checking of boarding passes. Their official opening will take place on March 6, the capital’s airport announced.
The implementation of electronic counters is an important acquisition to improve the passenger experience. Their use significantly reduces waiting time in queues, as passengers can self-check their boarding passes. The electronic counters at Sofia Airport are the first such to be implemented at a Bulgarian airport.
On March 31, 2024, Bulgaria will become a member of the Schengen area along the air and water borders. Sofia Airport has already informed what is useful for passengers to know.
If you are a departing passenger:
Traveling to a Schengen country, you check in your luggage, then just go through security and head to the departure gate without going through passport control. The requirement to carry an identity document remains mandatory.
If your destination is to a country outside the Schengen area, the travel procedure remains the same as it has been up to this point – baggage registration, security check and passport control.
If you are an arriving passenger:
If you are landing at Sofia Airport from a Schengen member country, after landing the plane you go directly to collect your luggage, if you have one registered, without going through passport control.
If you are arriving from a destination outside the Schengen area, the border check procedure before receiving checked baggage remains the same as it has been up to this point.
