A judo tournament among applicants for inclusion in the Olympic team was held in Almaty. The winner was Eldos Smetov, Liter.kz reports with reference to Olympic.kz.
According to the source, three Kazakh judokas took part in the selection in the category up to 60 kilograms: Nurkanat Serikbaev, Magzhan Shamshadin and Eldos Smetov.
All of them successfully qualified and were included in the number of potential participants in the Olympic Games. However, according to the rules, only one representative per country can compete in each weight category.
“A mini-tournament was held to determine the participant. Smetov won two victories and took first place. Serikbaev took second place, and Shamshadin lost in both fights,” the NOC said in a statement on June 7.
Thus, Eldos Smetov will represent Kazakhstan at the 2024 Olympic Games. He previously won a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Games and a bronze medal at Tokyo 2020.
