2024 continues to maintain the security trend that has been registered in El Salvador since the end of 2019, a result that to date has positioned the country as the safest in the region, and so far there have been 62 days without crimes against life. .
According to police data, the last day in which there were no homicides in the country was Sunday, March 17; So far this month there have been 14 days without a record of deaths due to violence. Additionally, January and February each recorded 24 homicide-free days.
The authorities attribute the decrease in homicidal violence as an effective result of the implementation of the Territorial Control Plan and the emergency regime, measures that have allowed the gangs to be dismantled and weakened and, therefore, weaken their actions.
With the Territorial Control Plan, the authorities managed to recover all the territories that the gangs had dominated, and the emergency regime gave new tools to the security forces to capture gang members and close their financing valves with the seizure of drugs, weapons , vehicles, etc.
These actions have allowed President Nayib Bukele’s entire administration to record 580 days without crimes against life.
It should be noted that the drop in the homicide rate in the country also began to be noticeable since President Bukele took office in 2019. In the first year he set a low record in homicides, since he reduced it to 20 murders for every 100,000 inhabitants or 3.7 per day.
So far in 2024, the daily average has decreased 0.3 and continues to remain downward.
“We are living in an El Salvador where death and homicides are no longer our daily lives, we are focused precisely on improving the infrastructure of our schools, our health units,” said the Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro.
