The regional hockey team competitions took place on Saturday 20 January in Erglii, parish of Brunava, on the ice of the local lake. The sports organizer of the parish department, Dace Kalniņa, was surprised by the number of participants’ registrations: eight. The event turned into a regional championship.

Boys and men came from Mežotne, Codes, Bauskas, even very far from Skaistkalne. Among them there are both those who have already been playing in the units for years, such as the experienced team with the ironic name “Rookies” from the village of Garoza, Mežotne parish, and real beginners who only gathered this season and started playing – for example, the young people of Codes, who previously created a football team and started competing, now also thought about playing hockey. On the other hand, G. Kalnmalis, who also plays in three teams together with the Iecava hockey team, tells “Bauskas Dzīve” that the ice rink in Garoza is arranged as it should be: “There is lighting, boards. We made the drainage of the bottom area with sand and drainage pipes. In spring we open them and prepare them so that the parts do not rot, even though they have served for years, they should be replaced. It seems that we started playing on the pond in 2000 The boy also grew up, he needed a job somehow, now the “youngest” needs to be educated, Mārcis, 17 years old, also plays hockey, three times a week we go to the Ozolnieki ice hall with the team “Iecava” to the train. Yes, the hockey players from Iecava did not participate in the games in Brunava, because they went to Austria to hide and play hockey with the locals. This time there will be a strong team to meet the trainees … Guido also went to Austria together with everyone in previous years, now he missed the trip once.

On Saturday Guido Kalnmalis supported his colleague Daci Kalniņu at an organizational level in carrying out the competition in Brunavas Ārglii. Each team had three participants on the small goal, without a goalkeeper, for a change the fourth hockey player was a reserve. The composition of the team, as foreseen by the regulation, can be formed without age and gender limits. This time neither women nor girls played in the teams, but the age of hockey players was very different, both men up to fifty years old and boys 16-17 years old played. All 8 teams were divided into two subgroups, the duration of each match is 2 x 6 minutes. Strength techniques were prohibited, but injuries also occurred, because, as the participants said, “this is not table hockey in a room, there is ice, skates, speed, sticks and pucks.”
Andris Bergmanis of Garoza’s “Beginners” refereed correctly the matches in which he did not play.
At the end of the sports day, the distribution of seats is as follows: victory and 1st place for the “Skaistkalne” team (Matīss Ākis, Krists Kaminskis, Vilnis Saulīts, Rihards Savickis); 2nd place – “Throwers 2”; In 3rd place – “Ceraukste”. Subsequently, the teams were classified as follows: v. 4. “Initiatives” (from Garoza, Mežotne parish); v.5 “Throwers”; v.6 “Rainis” of Grenctāles of the Parish of Brunava; v.7 team “Botmanis” and 8th grade “Slider” from Codes.
