Eight dead in metal products factory explosion

Eight people died in an explosion at a metal products factory in eastern Jiangsu province on Saturday, state media reported.

The explosion occurred at 3.38am local time (19:38 GMT Friday) at a factory located in the city of Changzhou, 180km northwest of Shanghai, according to the official Xinhua news agency. “A dust explosion occurred at the production workshop of Shenrong Metal Technology Limited, killing eight people and slightly injuring eight others,” Xinhua said.

This type of explosion occurs when flammable particles, including metal, ignite in the air. An investigation into the explosion has been launched, Xinhua adds.

Fatal industrial accidents are common in China where safety regulations are often poorly enforced. In May 2023, nine people died in an explosion at a hydrogen peroxide production plant in Liaocheng, east China’s Shandong Province.

In November 2022, 38 people died at a factory in Henan, central China, with authorities accusing employees of improper handling during an electric welding operation.
