Ecuador’s Prosecutor’s Office dismisses complaint against Mexican diplomat Roberto Canseco

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Although it confirmed that it received a complaint against the Mexican diplomat Roberto Canseco for “obstruction of justice” in the operation to capture Jorge Glas at the Mexican Embassy in Quito, the Attorney General’s Office of Ecuador reported that will not carry out the investigation due to his diplomatic immunity.

In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office stressed that it had the obligation to receive the complaint – presented by two people identified as Galo Monteverde and Milton Castillo – but decided not to open the investigation folder and inform Mexico about the “news of the crime.” .

During the raid on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador on April 5, Canseco stood between police officers and Jorge Glas, with the intention of avoiding the arrest of the former vice president of Ecuador, to whom the Mexican government had just granted asylum.

Canseco, who had assumed the reins of the diplomatic mission after the expulsion of ambassador Raquel Serur Smeke, was mistreated by the police.

The police operation against the diplomatic compound was severely condemned by the international community, and led Mexico to break diplomatic relations with the government of Daniel Noboa.

The government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador filed a lawsuit against Ecuador before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and demands that Noboa apologize publicly and issue a safe passage so that Glas can leave prison and leave his country.
