Ecuadorian police arrested armed men who took over the headquarters of TC Televisión (+video and photos)

The Ministry of Education has suspended classes across the country for this week.

Ecuadorian police reported that they arrested all of the armed men who entered TC Televisión in Guayaquil while the channel was on the air.

“We have 13 people arrested, all the kidnappers who entered the station have been arrested,” a police officer told local channel Teleamazonas.

“We are collecting the evidence, the weapons and explosives with which they entered,” he assured.

“This act is considered an act of terrorism,” the police officer said.

Controls are increasing

Ecuador’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has asked airport operators to strengthen “access controls to airport facilities, public areas and their surroundings”, amid the situation of violence currently affecting the country.

As explained by the body, the measure aims to “preserve the safety of aeronautical personnel, aircraft and passengers”.

“Furthermore, the highest authority of the Civil Aviation carried out the corresponding coordination with the institutions of the State, the National Police and the Armed Forces, responsible for collaborating respectively in the maintenance of peace and security, as well as in the defense of sovereignty and integrity territorial, so that airport facilities and air navigation aids for civil aviation are not affected,” he said in a statement.

And he added that “these actions are essential since the events occurring on national territory constitute a situation of such gravity that they overcome normal control mechanisms and compromise people’s rights”.

Roberto Izurieta Canova, Secretary General of Communications of the Presidency of Ecuador, reported on social networks on Tuesday that a Public Security Council had been installed.

“At this time, the State and Public Security Council has just been established to analyze the situation in the country; statements will be made at the end of this meeting,” he wrote.

Lessons suspended

The Ministry of Education of Ecuador announced in X that in-person lessons are suspended throughout the National Education System until Friday 12 January.

“We inform citizens that the transition to in-person mode is available throughout the National Education System until Friday 12 January 2024,” he published on X, formerly Twitter.
