Ecuador invades Mexican embassy, suspending diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Ecuadorian authorities raided the Mexican embassy in the capital Quito on Friday evening (local time). Mexico is furious and has halted diplomatic relations with the country.

Mexico had been hosting former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas in its embassy in Quito since December. The man was convicted twice for corruption in his own country, but says he is being politically persecuted. Ecuadorian authorities ordered police on Friday evening to raid the embassy and arrest the man. This was even accompanied by a scuffle with Roberto Canseco, the embassy chief of staff who tried to thwart the arrest.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is outraged by the Ecuadorian demarche, calling it a “violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty.” He says he has ordered his foreign minister to suspend diplomatic ties with Ecuador.
