Economy and business, Bankruptcy | Sharp increase in the number of bankruptcies

According to new data from Dun & Bradstreet, 304 businesses had to permanently close their doors in Norway in December.

This corresponds to an increase of 18% compared to the previous year.

After a surprising decline in November, the arrow then turned again.

In summary, 2023 has been a challenging year for Norwegian businesses, especially in low-margin sectors.

Negative spiral

According to the analytics firm, 2023’s losers will likely also be next year’s losers.

The much-discussed negative trend in bankruptcies continues unabated and Dun & Bradstreet forecasts indicate that bankruptcies will increase further in 2024.

– Expect a sharp increase now

– We expect a sharp increase in bankruptcies in the first quarter, CEO Kari Mette Almskog of Dun & Bradstreet told Nettavisen just before Christmas.

Those who work in the hotel, restaurant and retail sectors are most at risk.

According to the report “AS Norge Analysen”, compared to last year the number of bankruptcies in the retail trade increased by 42%. In hotels and restaurants there are 35% more bankruptcies.
