Switzerland is wonderful
Disney+ on Wednesday 10 January will make a small deviation from the rule that the streaming channel had set itself, that of waiting a week before making a new episode of its series available, often after a first draft of the first two episodes. .
“Echo”, the new Marvel miniseries, will be included in its entirety in its catalogue, indicate the promoters of the service. We were able to preview 3 of its 5 episodes.
“Echo”, nickname of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), is a young woman of Native American descent who has the distinction of having a prosthetic leg. She is a secondary character from the “Hawkeye” series (put online, also on Disney +, in 2021) where we discovered her bad girl under the protection of infamous kingpin Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). So secondary that we had even forgotten its existence.
This new series thus puts her in the foreground with a first episode that places a strong emphasis on her ethnic origins, on the car accident that seriously injures her, on her migration to New York where she learns to fight, on the meeting with the Caïd who he takes her under his protection and returns her to her rural region of origin. Some of the key elements have already been mentioned in “Hawkeye”, this inaugural episode serves mainly as a telegraphic reminder. Not very convincing in terms of dramatic construction.
In the gray area
The other episodes develop Maya’s new life, still in the gray area of good and evil. In tone, “Echo” is closer to Netflix’s Marvel series (“Jessica Jones” or “Dardevil,” in particular). The atmosphere is more realistic, the tones darker, the superhero aspect is more everyday. Does this make it a good series? We are far from this conclusion. Shot without genius, the series gets bogged down in well-intentioned ethnic considerations, in seen, revised and corrected choreographic violence and in heavy family pathos.
The fact that you can swallow the pill almost in one go doesn’t change anything. We don’t think “Echo” will have a lasting impact on the Marvel Extended Universe. The series will remain a very peripheral element. Not necessarily indecent for non-jaded fans, but pointless for others.
