Pakistan’s 2024 general election broke the records of previous elections in 2018 for several reasons. Among these are the record budget allocated for this year’s elections and the large number of voters. Besides, there is the issue of unprecedented delay in publishing election results. These issues were highlighted in the light of Pakistan’s media Geo News.

A total of more than 1.4 lakh election workers performed their duties in 90 thousand 675 polling stations of the country. Of those polling stations, 16,766 were declared as highly sensitive. A public holiday was declared on February 8 across the country to ensure voter turnout at polling stations.

Mobile phone services were suspended since dawn due to security concerns. As a result, polling was held peacefully on a large scale in the country. However, a terrorist attack took place in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Four policemen were martyred.
Election results were supposed to be out a few hours after midnight, but they were unusually delayed. The official results were not declared even on the third day after the end of polling.

Besides, former Prime Minister Imran Khan won the 2018 election but he and his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) could not participate in this election due to political and legal complications. However, independent candidates supported by PTI participated in this election. They dominated the election as soon as the results were announced privately. So far independents are ahead. However, both the PTI and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have claimed to be in a position to form a majority government at the Centre. The non-declaration of an official result has sparked controversy over the unreasonable delay.
