The leader of the men’s national team, Rastorgujev, is in 22nd place in the overall World Cup ranking after three stages, and the start can certainly be considered positive, considering the illness before the start of the season in Sweden, which affected the process of preparation and also sporting form.
“I started in all competitions in which it was possible to participate. The results are good, but they are not the real results yet, because I am not in the best condition,” said Rastorgujev, underlining the difficulties encountered at the beginning of the season. “The physical conditions were not those expected before the season. They changed due to an illness that occurred before the start of the season itself. I ran the first start fresh, but the subsequent ones were not easy to run.”
Due to illness, Andrej did not complete the tasks included in the preparation plan. Robbie then stood out in the important training work.
At the beginning of the season, Rastorgujev’s best result is 4th place over the distance of 20 kilometers, achieved in the first stage on the Swedish circuit of Östersund. The Latvian biathlete made the only mistake in the last shootout, but getting into the top four at this distance is a repeat of his career best – he previously managed to take 4th place in 20 kilometers in 2012/2013. in the season of the year.
“In general it went well and I think I did the best I could do that day. Despite that mistake that cost the podium, in any case, everything was fine with the illness and the physical condition”, recalls the biathlete of the start in Sweden.
Rastorgujev has always stood out for his excellent skiing speed on the slopes, however, for the reasons mentioned above, he has not been able to really demonstrate it this season. While the speed on the track is usually quite good, the shooting stability tends to disappoint.
In the first three stages Rastorgujev stood out with an excellent shot from the floor – only one mistake was made,
which makes the Aluk native one of the best lay-down shooters early in the season. There are more errors in the set shot, but even 80% hits is not a bad indicator.
“We worked a lot on shooting with coach Valdis Bēržinus, we worked with a Norwegian specialist on psychological stability,” Rastorgujevs explained about the nuances of shooting. “There’s really a lot of work invested and I focused a lot on shooting alone. I looked for an approach, I looked for a position, I went even deeper. As for standing shooting, before the season in late October, I had slightly modified the release, I added a small shade. That shade paid me a lot in the end and it was a bad decision on my part, I had to remove it.”
In the types of skiing, including biathlon, the technical rules have been slightly modified, i.e. fluoride has even been eliminated from the ski lubricants, so the technical staff must look for the best solutions that respect the rules and guarantee the best possible smoothness of the ski . skis on the slopes.
“Our service team works excellently: they do, they test, they look, they wake up early and work. In the big countries they work all year round to find the best, they have machines for the structure of the skis, which we don’t we have,” Rastorgujev underlined. the technical nuances. “As we know
any innovation is an advantage for large countries, because they can do more and faster, there are more people doing everything.
With their number of people, they find a better option faster than us, but our service goes the extra mile and does a great job. Of course, in some races the skis were not so competitive, it happens, but it doesn’t depend on the serve, it depends on the whole set. Swedes, Norwegians always find something, Italy. If you follow, sometimes the Germans have the best speeds, but then they disappear somewhere, something is found there too.”
Between races Rastorgujev trained to improve his condition, telling the athlete that this is actually the only time in the season when it is possible to train qualitatively and prepare for an intense program of races immediately after the end of the year.
“When you go to World Cup stages, you can only maintain what you trained for. This is the time when you can do something, change something, but there are not so many days,” the biathlete said. “It all depends on how you feel and I try to listen more to the body, what it needs, what it requires. You can understand more from that too.
If you roll without penalty and fight for ten, then you are still far from that condition, don’t hit them [līderiem] present
But after Östersund, every stage was better, maybe somewhere in the recovery on the feet it didn’t come to the end, but there is a reference point: it’s good and not bad. It’s not that the disease has completely disappeared, his condition is holding up, even if it’s not the best,” Rastorgujev said.
The leading Latvian biathlete said that he intends to participate in the European Championship, however, the start of this competition will depend on his health. Also worth taking into consideration is the intense racing program at the beginning of the year: three stages of the World Cup will be held in January, followed by the European Championship, and February will feature the World Championship, which this year will take place on the Czech Novmesto track . Rastorgujev says that the most important start of this season will be the world championship and he is preparing for this too.
On Friday at the World Cup stage in Oberhof there will be a sprint for both men (at 12.15pm) and women (at 3.20pm). The pursuit race will take place on Saturday, while on Sunday the stage will end with the classic men’s and women’s relays. All races can be watched live on LTV7 and LSM.lv.
