Due to lack of maintenance, 14 SEME ambulances do not work

The director of the Out-of-hospital Medical Emergency Service (SEME), Dr. Cristhian González, acknowledged that of the 26 authorized ambulances that the service has for Asunción and Central, only 12 work, since the others are stranded due to lack of maintenance.

“This situation is due to the lack of maintenance and repair of the units, which also has as a background the loss of coverage for the mechanical workshop, when the previous contract expires,” explained the director.

He stated that “with the 26 ambulances we could function much better, but in December we were left without the workshop service.”

To assist critical cases, today there are 5 ambulances for adults and another 2 for children, he said. Despite this, the quantity is still insufficient for current demand.

He also admitted that the SEME has a “petty cash” to carry out repairs and purchases of some spare parts, although they eventually have to make contributions out of pocket when the money is not enough.

González announced that, while the tender and award to reactivate the mechanical workshop is finalized, they will ask the Ministry of Health to be considered within the exceptional expenses.
