BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Two young brothers were killed and several other people were injured, some seriously, when a vehicle driven by a person believed to be intoxicated crashed into a birthday party Saturday at a yacht club. said a Michigan police chief.
An 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother died at the scene when a 66-year-old woman drove her vehicle more than 7 meters (25 feet) into the building around 3 p.m. at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Detroit, said Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough.
“Emergency personnel said that the scene was total chaos, where those who were directly involved and those who witnessed this horrendous incident showed a high level of emotion,” he added.
Three children and six adults were taken to area hospitals in two helicopters or ambulances, some of them with life-threatening injuries, he said. Others received first aid at the scene, while others were taken to hospitals in private vehicles.
Goodnough did not identify the woman driving the vehicle, but said she was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol resulting in death.
She is already cooperating with authorities, he said, and will likely face more charges as the investigation continues.
