Driving on dust-sand roads – 2024-04-18 02:28:40

A part of the main road of Padmapukur union in Shyamnagar coastal upazila of Satkhira has turned into a death trap. For more than a century and a half, the road has been covered but no coating has fallen on it. In this situation, dust and sand has become a liability.

Going to the main road of the union, it can be seen that double brick soling work has been done for five kilometers in the last two years on the 13 km road from Pakhimara Kheyaghat to Chaudarshi Bridge. Of the remaining eight kilometers, five kilometers are dirt roads. This road is the busiest and the only means of land movement for the people of neighboring Gabura Union. But the condition of the road is bad. Locals are suffering greatly.

Shahin Alam, a resident of Patakhali village in the union, told Jago News, ‘Looking at the road, it looks like the road of a war-torn country. Even if the people’s representatives can’t build a road, the people can live if they sprinkle water on the sand and at least provide traffic. Years go by, but no bricks fall on the road, no water falls. Now turned into a pile of sand.’

Masum Hossain, a resident of the same area, told Jago News, ‘We are people of the coastal area. In natural disasters, the medium waterways are closed. The only road is also in poor condition. No cars ply here. Motorcycle is our only hope. It is also unable to move on this road. If the road is paved, we will benefit a lot.’

Chairman of Padmapukur Union, Amzadul Islam, told Jago News that we have failed several times to build the road. The matter has been informed to the higher authorities of the road department. Hope the work of the road will be completed in the future.

Anwar Parvez, Executive Engineer of Satkhira Roads and Public Ways Department, said that a few days ago, a tender for one kilometer of brick soling was made. We will work on the rest of the road if the money is allocated in the future. Work is ongoing in this regard.
