One history after another India’s Calcutta metro service is under construction. A few days ago, metro service was started under the Ganges in the city. As a result communication between Kolkata and Howrah has become easier. Now automatic train operation or driverless metro service has started there. Driverless Metto officially launched from Monday (April 16). On this day, the service was inaugurated by the East-West Metro on the Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector Five route.
Currently, East-West Metro’s Sealda-Sector Five route is serviced at 20-minute intervals. The introduction of this service is expected to reduce the time interval in automatic train operation by two to three minutes.
This service is brand new in the city. Therefore, the authorities said that the presence of drivers in the metro will be ensured in the beginning. But even if there are drivers in the metro, they have almost no role in running it. In this context, Kolkata Metro General Manager P Udayakumar Reddy said that even if the metro rake can be run automatically, the driver will be present in the cabin initially keeping in mind the safety of the passengers.
He was saying that this is a completely new thing for the commuters of Kolkata. Therefore, it is normal for the passengers to feel a lot of anxiety about the driverless metro rake. For this, the presence of drivers in the cabin will be ensured at the beginning.
Regarding the role of drivers in the cabin, Uday Kumar Reddy said, practically they will not have any role there. This decision may change later as passengers start adapting to the system.
The authorities said about the operation of this metro without drivers, automatic signaling system has been installed on the East-West metro line. By doing this, all the movements of the metro can be controlled from the control room. As a result, the passenger-laden metro will be able to travel without a driver.
Automated rake operation on this route has been started for the past few months. This service was launched after its success.
