MÉRIDA, Mexico – The Government of Havana assured that the leak presented by the Havana Tunnel does not currently represent a danger to the structure and the circulation of vehicles.
In a Facebook post published this Wednesday, the authorities assured that “as a result of a leak that emerged inside the tunnel, studies were carried out by the National Company for Applied Research (ENIA) of MICONS.”
In this way, the studies concluded that “the drip cycle observed is similar to that presented at other times in previous years and that, although it will be intervened for waterproofing, something that is being worked on as it requires conditions, materials and specialized advice, it does not At the moment it represents a danger to the current structure and circulation of the tunnel,” they justified.
Likewise, they stated that they plan “other maintenance actions that will be carried out soon, this time on the tube in the Havana-Cabaña direction, the organizational details of which will be reported.”
The Government’s clarification is preceded by complaints on social networks and concern among Havana residents about the precarious situation of the tunnel.
A Havana resident consulted by CubaNet, told us that “inside the tunnel it rains, there are puddles, there are open sewers, there are parts of the tunnel where they have removed the sewers and have put in iron plates, so that it runs away. And especially when you come from Eastern Havana it rains inside the tunnel, dripping often, dripping.”
The Havana Tunnel was inaugurated on May 31, 1958, one year after its construction began. Built under the mandate of Fulgencio Batista, it is among the monumental public works of the final years of the republican period. The French company Société de Grands Travaux de Marseille was at the forefront of the project.
Since its construction was completed, it has rarely closed for maintenance.
Several years ago, the same company that was in charge of its construction carried out a general repair, in which the faults that could facilitate, in the event of cyclones or torrential rains, the penetration of the sea into its enclave area or along its access roads. There has never been an accident due to collapses or internal leaks.
