Drenthe enjoys the winter weather: “Seize the opportunity when it comes”

The vast majority of ice rinks in Drenthe are still closed today, but that doesn’t stop people from Drenthe from getting out on the ice.

This is how the irons were tied to Stuifzand. Not on the normal ice rink, but in the so-called cream cage, which was flooded for the occasion. This morning the primary school children were able to go there. “Language is stupid, so good thing we’re skating now,” one girl says. “It’s going really well, but I’ve already fallen a few times.”

A classmate agreed: “I couldn’t skate very well, so I put my shoes back on.”

Although ice in nature is not the same thickness everywhere, many people still venture into it. One of them is ranger Tjeerd Langhout, who tours the Elpermeer near Schoonloo. “The ice is amazing, smooth as a mirror,” he beams. “I’m having fun while I can.”

According to Langhout, the Elpermeer ice is reliable. “I know this area very well. Its maximum depth is only thirty to forty centimeters,” he says. “The water here does not drain away. This is the case with flooded ditches and rivers. There the water disappears under the ice. If you are not familiar with the terrain, you should not go on the ice.”

What’s so great about skating on natural ice? “This cannot be explained. Natural ice is becoming increasingly rare in the Netherlands, so seize the opportunity when it presents itself.”
