A video of a drag queen in the Philippines sparked outrage as she portrayed Jesus as a rock star. In particular, Amadeus Fernando Pagende, whose stage name is Pura Luka Vega, was arrested in early March for violating the law on obscene spectacles that offend race or religion.
The specific offense carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years in the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic country, as 86% of its residents identify as Catholic. However, supporters of the drag queen managed to raise the 360,000 pesos (4,700 euros) bail and thus the 33-year-old Paguete was released after his arrest.
Arrest for the same offence
Pagente was also arrested last October for the same crime and at that time he had presented a rock version of Jesus in a video with him being considered “persona non grata” by many in the Philippines as he has received hate messages and threats for his appearances.
